Banned Music Videos

No-one is a hundred percent sure exactly how subliminal videos work but the best theory is that the subliminal messages they contain bypass your conscious mind and go straight through to your subconscious.

That probably sounds a bit weird. So let's examine the idea of subliminal messages a bit further.

Consider that we process millions of pieces of information every second we view an object or scene. Most of what we view is unimportant at any given time, so our mind "tunes out" the bits of information that it doesn't consider worth thinking about. For instance, if we're looking at a lawn of grass then our mind will say "that's a lawn of grass". It won't spend time analyzing each blade of grass and noting how each one is a subtly different shade of green.

It follows that there is an awful lot of information that goes straight through to our mind's internal trash can.

Subliminal messages exploit the idea that our mind can process a lot more information than it lets on.

If you're watching a video that contains subliminal messages, chances are that the message will only appear for one or two frames. Which means that the messages will only show on screen for a fraction of a second. Fast enough for our subconscious mind to notice them but far too fast for our main, conscious, mind to notice them at all.

Although the effectiveness of subliminal messages in advertising is not totally proven, most major countries have decided that it's better to ban the idea. So subliminal advertising, whether it's subliminal messages in videos or advertising jingles, is banned in the USA, UK and Australia.

Subliminal videos are available to run on your computer, so you can test their effectiveness on yourself.
